Ethics in Practice
Trust, integrity, and sound professional judgement in valuation practice.
Trust is fundamental to the property and built-environment professions. The decisions made by valuers and other property professionals can affect individuals, businesses, communities, financial institutions and public resources. Sound methodology must therefore be supported by sound professional judgement and ethical conduct.
VDH promotes honest, independent and respectful professional engagement. We encourage members to act with integrity, remain objective, work within their areas of competence, protect confidential information and disclose any interests or circumstances that could influence—or reasonably appear to influence—their judgement.
Ethical practice also requires transparency. Assumptions, limitations, uncertainties and material sources of information should be communicated clearly. Professional conclusions should be based on appropriate evidence and should be capable of being explained and defended.
VDH provides a forum in which difficult professional and ethical questions may be discussed constructively. Members are encouraged to challenge ideas and methodologies while respecting the individuals involved. Discussions should focus on learning, professional development and the advancement of responsible practice.
VDH is an educational and professional discussion platform. It is not a regulatory or disciplinary body and does not investigate or adjudicate professional complaints. Participation in VDH does not replace the obligations imposed by applicable legislation, regulatory authorities, professional bodies, employers or client agreements. Members remain responsible for identifying and complying with the requirements applicable to their profession and jurisdiction.
Where ethical requirements differ between countries or professions, members should apply the relevant local requirements and seek appropriate professional or legal guidance where necessary.
